With the huge success of BUG-LESS, our all-natural mosquito repellent, customers asked for a natural deterrent for ticks, especially with the increase in Lyme Disease. All of our research pointed to one TICK solution- Rose Geranium Essential Oil, specifically “pelargonium capitatum x radens” from South Africa. There are different species of the plant Rose Geranium. The most common is from Egypt known as “pelargonium graveolens.” It does not have the same ratio of chemical compounds as the species from South Africa and is therefore not as effective.
How does it work? Simple. Ticks HATE it.. Read this passage from a recent article in ThoughtCo.- “What’s remarkable, however, is just how well the tick can smell you and sense even your slightest movement. Using its Haller’s organ, a tick can detect the carbon dioxide you exhale with each breath and the ammonia in your sweat. With its legs outstretched, the tiny tick can pick up on all the foul odors people produce, from bad breath to belches, and it can even smell your farts. But even the most well-groomed and properly behaved hiker can’t avoid detection by the Haller’s organ, because it can also sense changes in temperature as you approach….” (from “How Do Ticks Get on You?” by Debbie Hadley, ThoughtCo., August 21, 2017)
Pelargonium capitatum x radens is highly concentrated and should only be used in small quantities. Applying one drop to each ankle, behind each knee and on each wrist is what’s recommended. Ticks will typically latch onto your lower legs and work their way upward. You can also apply it to clothing- socks, shoes, pants, shirt sleeves, hats, anything you are wearing. I also apply a drop to the back of my neck.
It is not recommended to apply essential oils to children under the age of 2. For children 2 and older, test a drop of oil on the inside ankle and wait 15 minutes for any allergic reaction. If no reaction, apply to ankles, knees, and wrists as directed above. This oil can also be safely applied to clothing, a good idea for small children- shoes, socks, hats, shorts waistband back and front, back and front of shirt collar. For dogs, apply one drop on each shoulder blade and at the base of the tail (where it meets the back). Do not put near the face. If your dog is very active outdoors, running around in the woods, swimming, or just outdoors more than indoors, you will have to apply more oil more often. Use your judgment. Do not use on cats. For horses, a spray can be made. We include a recipe for a spray in the information that comes with your order. You’ll have to tweak the ratio of ingredients to make enough for a horse. Like all essential oils, use this wisely and store in a cool dry place. Keep out of the reach of children and animals. This oil should not be ingested. Comes packaged in a glass, amber-colored bottle with safety cap and euro dropper. Contains 10ml of undiluted pelargonium capitatum x radens rose geranium essential oil. About 200 actual drops.
Please note: During hot summer months, we ship the oil in a 15 ml size bottle to allow for expansion due to excessive heat.
