The following information was borrowed from the book, “The Green Pharmacy,” by James A. Duke, Ph.D.- Jewelweed is a succulent, orange-flowered annual plant that can prevent or dramatically hinder the symptoms of poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. The active chemical in these poison plants is Urushiol. One-billionth of a gram of Urushiol can cause a reaction. However, the active chemical in jewelweed – lawsone- binds to the skin even quicker than Urushiol, and if applied immediately after contact with a poison plant, it can prevent the rash.
